I'm not familiar with the market, what does this market mean to the neighborhood?

For more than a century, Mott’s Market has served our community as a pantry, gathering place, and safe haven for neighbors of all ages and backgrounds. From being a favorite among kids for an after school snack, to being a critical resource during snow storms and pandemics, our corner market has watched generations of families grow up and has enriched our neighborhood's history. The corner market represents a way of life that is disappearing on Capitol Hill. We have lost many similar markets in the past decade and recognize that we can’t let this moment pass us by.

Why should I invest in Mott’s?

Mott’s Market has been a fixture in our neighborhood for more than 100 years. On the brink of losing another corner store, a group of neighbors banded together to save it, buying the building and working together to make it even better than before. We’ve renovated it, and found someone to run it who is really excited to serve our community. Now we need your help to make this dream a reality! Ownership gives you a lasting stake in the neighborhood and a voice in the market’s vision for the future. It also connects you to a friendly group of neighbors committed to making Capitol Hill an even better place to live.

Why should I invest NOW?

Our base of existing neighborhood investors – more than 60-people strong – has stretched their wallets even further to challenge you to join them. If you invest before April 30, your purchase of one member share in our business – just a $5,000 investment – can become a $10,000 investment; up to $70k.

This gets us faster to our goal and doubles the impact of your investment in Mott’s Market!

Who started this initiative and why?

The beginnings were organic but can be traced back to a few casual porch discussions among neighbors. After coming to the conclusion that multiple neighbors dreamed of saving the Market, we decided to try to make it a reality.

Who will run the market?

Local entrepreneur Peyton Sherwood plans to open a market in the renovated, expanded space. There will also be indoor and outdoor seating where guests can get items like wine or sandwiches. Target date is this summer, hopefully by June or July. You can read more about Peyton’s vision HERE.

What about the upstairs unit? Will that be turned into retail space?

No, the upstairs will remain a residential rental unit.

If Mott's couldn't survive, what makes you think a new market would?

In addition to preserving the corner market, we revitalized the space and selected a retailer that can expand the offerings beyond what the previous store was able to provide. This includes wine, prepared food, coffee, and baked goods alongside the corner store staples. Our research indicates that this will allow for a higher profit-margin.
